Spinner? Why am I called Spinner? (11/09/2006 17:17) |
I was just asked in the ML-Chat: "Why do you call yourself Spinner?" First of all, let me reassure everyone that it has nothing to do with the german interpretation of the word "Spinner" which means someone "slightly loopy", "eccentric" or "crazy". Nor does it have anything to do with the early attempts of online commercial radio software under the same name. Spinner is my online nickname used several places. I have used it for more than 8 years now, and it is often put into the context of Planetarion and ManagerLeague, the last two games I have made / been part of making. None of these games have anything to do with the choice of nickname though, yet it is game-related. In 1998, I worked for a company called Fairplay International on a project that was never to see the light of day. After hours (sometimes even DURING hours) we could suddenly fuind ourselves having a little fun over the internal network with some kind of game. And at this specific point in time, a racing game called Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit came out. We played it A LOT for a while, and allthough I became quite good at it, there was a time early on when I was always left behind the other cars at the start of a race, because the rear wheels were SPINNING. And it didn't take long before my colleagues picked up on it, and thus "Spinner" (He who cometh last due to spinning) was born. So that's the background story. And it just stuck, sort of. And when people suddenly told me I was writing my smilies backwards (which I didn't know and hadn't thought about), there was only one answer I could give them: "They're not smilies, they're Spinners!"
